Juri Rhyu @newyork
Juri Rhyu is an artist and educator born in Korea and based in New York. Juri’s work delves into the emotional complexities of the human experience. She strives to capture the subtle universal emotions that we all feel but often find difficult to express. Through her art, Juri aims to offer comfort allowing those who engage with it to feel seen, understood, and accepted.
She paints hands as symbols of emotion—each with only four fingers taking on a cartoonish form. These hands are simple yet profound representing the imperfect yet deeply human nature of our feelings.
The central theme in Juri’s work is “위로” (we-ro). In Korean, this word means the act of comforting someone with love and care, accepting them as they are. While there’s no perfect English equivalent, the closest translation she can offer is “love and care.” This is exactly what Juri hopes my audience feels when they interact with my work.
Life is short and through my art, I hope to remind people that in the end, what truly matters is filling our lives with love.
